منظور از رفتار اجتماعی هر نوع رفتاری است که متضمن کنش متقابل دو یا چند انسان باشد.
فرد رفتاهای اجتماعی خود را بر اساس مولفه های متعددی از قبیل فرهنگ و هنجارهای اعتقادی ، ارزشی و قانونی مورد قبول خود یا جامعه و همچنین نقش خود در اجتماع و هویتی که بدست آورده تنظیم می‌کند. در یک تقسیم بندی می‌توان رفتار اجتماعی را به دو نوع تقسیم نمود : رفتار جامعه پسند و رفتار جامعه ستیز. رفتار جامعه پسند آن دسته از رفتارهایی را شامل می‌شود که مورد قبول جامعه بوده و با قوانین و هنجارهای جامعه مطابقت دارد. این نوع از رفتارها سازنده و در جهت پیشبرد اهداف یک گروه یا اجتماع هستند. مثل نوع‌دوستی ، از سوی دیگر رفتار جامعه ستیز رفتارهایی منفی هستند که با قوانین و معیارهای جامعه مطابقت ندارند، مورد قبول افراد جامعه نیستند و اغلب پیامدهای منفی اجتماعی را برای فردی که مرتکب این رفتارها می‌شوند به همراه دارند. این دسته از رفتارها مخرب بوده و مانع پیشبرد اهداف گروه یا اجتماع هستند که فرد در آن قرار دارد. تعیین اینکه کدام رفتار پسند و کدام جامعه ستیز محسوب می‌شود، بر حسب منابع متعددی صورت می‌گیرد. دو منبع معتبر برای این بررسی ،قوانین رسمی در جامعه و هنجارهای عرضی و فرهنگی آن جامعه است .
