مدیریت تعارض عمل شناسایی و اداره تعارض با یک شیوه معقول،عادلانه و کاراست .به تعبیری دیگر مدیریت تعارض عبارت است از شناخت و بررسی تضادها در یک موقعیت معقول و قابل پیش بینی ، بصورت منصفانه و به روش موثر.
تعارض جزئی طبیعی و عادی از زندگی روزمره ما و واقعیتی است که بشر در طول تاریخ با آن آشنا بوده ولی متأسفانه به دلیل عدم مدیریت صحیح،بیشتر به ستیزه جویی مبدل شده است.لذا امروز افراد پیشینه ناخوشایندی از آن دارند و به تعارض به عنوان یک پدیده منفی نگاه می‌کنند..
تعارض زمانی رخ می‌دهد که دو یا چند نفر از افراد در مقابل یکدیگر قرار گیرند زیرا نیازها،خواسته‌ها، اهداف و ارزشهای آنها متفاوت است.نکته مهم در اینجا این است که هر چند تعارض امری اجتناب‌ناپذیر است و به دلیل متفاوت بودن اهداف، ارزشها و عقاید به وجود می‌آید، ولی میتوان آن را هدایت و به حداقل رساند و حل کرد لذا آگاهی از دانش و مهارتهای مدیریت تعارض به منظور استفاده از آن امری ضروری به‌نظر می‌رسد بنابراین میتوان گفت مدیریت تعارض شیوه‌ای است که تعارضهای سازمانی را در خدمت اهداف سازمان قرار می‌دهد و از جنبه غیرکارکردی آن می‌کاهد و به جنبه‌های کارکردی آن می‌افزاید.
