تصویر ذهنی بدنی از سه مفهوم اصلی واقعیت بدن یعنی بدن فرد آنگونه که هست، بدن ایده‌آل یعنی بدنی که فرد آرزومند آن است و بدن نمایشی یعنی بدنی که فرد نمایش می‌دهد، تشکیل شده است. نوجوان در خلال این تغییرات، بدن و ظاهر خود را با دیگران مقایسه می‌کند که این مقایسه در اکثر موارد به نارضایتی از ظاهر بدن خود منجر می‌شود. یکی از مهم‌ترین دلایل نارضایتی از بدن در دختران نوجوان، سمبل ایده‌آل غیر واقعی زیبایی زنانه در سال‌های اخیر است که به‌طور عمده به لاغری تاکید می‌کند و این لاغری مفرط برای اکثر دختران غیر قابل دستیابی است. مطالعات زیادی در جوامع غربی نشان داده‌اند که دختران نوجوان به‌طور فزاینده‌ای به لاغر شدن و کاهش اندازه بدن متمایل شده‌اند و میزان نارضایتی از تصویر ذهنی بدنی، عادات غذایی ناسالم و اختلالات تغذیه‌ای در آنان افزایش یافته که به‌علت تاثیر رسانه‌های جمعی و ایده‌آل‌های اجتماعی و تاثیر مد در این زمینه است.
