هرگاه بعد از پاسخی، محرکى را وارد محیط کنیم و آن محرک احتمال بروز پاسخ را افزایش دهد یا سبب ابقاى آن شود، به چنین محرکى تقویت‌کننده مثبت مى‌گویند. روش تقویت مثبت تقریبا" همان روش متداول پاداش است که همه معلمان با آن آشنا هستند و غالبا" آنرا مورد استفاده قرار می دهند . با این حال بین پاداش و تقویت مثبت اندکی تفاوت وجود دارد که روانشناسان را بر آن داشته است تا به جای پاداش از اصطلاح دقیق تر (تقویت مثبت) استفاده کنند. در پاداش دادن افراد ، هدف ما به طور عمده قدردانی و تشکر از اعمال گذشته آنهاست و گر چه پاداش یک رفتار معمولا" به تکرار آن می انجامد ، هدف ما از پاداش دادن به رفتار ، ضرورتا" تکرار آن رفتار در آینده نیست . اما در تقویت مثبت هدف الزاما" تکرار رفتار است . تقویت مثبت بهترین و مؤثرترین روش افزایش رفتار است . رعایت اصول زیر اثر بخشی تقویت کننده ها را بالا می برد .
