حسادت به معنی آرزو کردن زوال نعمت از کسی است که آن را به دست آورده است. شخص حسود کسی است که از وجود نعمت ، شادکامی ، موفقیت و پیشرفت دیگران در حیطه های مالی، تحصیلی و شغلی ، مورد توجه واقع شدن دیگران توسط فرد یا افراد دیگر ، مطرح شدن سایرین در حیطه های مختلف اجتماع ناراضی است و دوست ندارد که دیگری از نعمت یا آسایش برخوردار باشد. حسادت در نهایت تبدیل به ناتوانی و احساس کمبود در شخص حسود شده و او را دچار حقارت می کند.
حسادت واکنشى هیجانى است که از قریب دو سالگى آغاز مىشود و با رشد کودک، ممکن است تا بزرگسالى ادامه یابد. حسادت وقتی به وجود می آید که شخص احساس کند آنچه دارد، کمتر از آن چیزی است که باید داشته باشد. حسود بودن، ژنتیکی نیست بلکه آموختنی است و خانواده ای که دائما در حال قیاس کردن خود ، زندگی و فرزندانشان با دیگران هستند، قطعا کودکانی حسود تربیت می کنند. خانواده ها برای مقابله با حسادت می توانند با ارضای نیازهای عاطفی و محبت به فرزندشان مانع ایجاد کمبودهای عاطفی و نیازهای معنوی برآورده نشده آنان شوند.از سوی دیگر والدین نباید از این نکته غفلت کنند که دخترها به دلیل شدت احساسات و عواطف فطری بیش از پسران در معرض این آسیب قرار دارند و ممکن است حسود بار بیایند.
