هویت جمعی عبارت است از تعلق خاطر تعدادی از افراد به اموری مشترک با عنوان خاص، چنین تعلقی موجب احساس همبستگی و شکل گیری یک واحد جمعی می شودکه با عنوان « ما » از ماهای دیگر جدا می شود.
هویت جمعی به حس تعلق افراد به یک گروه (دسته‌جمعی) اشاره دارد. هویت جمعی از دیدگاه فرد، بخشی از هویت شخصی خود است. گاهی اوقات، احساس تعلق به یک گروه خاص می‌تواند بقدری مستحکم و قوی باشد که ابعاد دیگر هویتی فرد را تحت تأثیر قرار دهد؛ تا حدی که فرد حیات خویش را برای بقا و حفظ آن گروه به خطر می‌اندازد.
هویت جمعی به‌طورکلی به‌عنوان یک کاتالیزور برای تغییر در طول تاریخ شناخته‌شده است. این مفهوم اشاره به بخشی از هویت مشترک با یک گروه بزرگ‌تر دارد که آن را به‌عنوان یک احساس مشترک "ما" حول اهداف مشترک اجتماعی و یا سیاسی استفاده می‌کنیم. این اهداف مشترک برآیند بخشی از حس مشترک گروه از هویت خویش است؛ و همچنین به تقویت حس همبستگی و هویت جمعی این گروه کمک می‌کند. این تقویت متقابل بین هویت و اهداف ممکن است توضیح دهد که قدرت فوق‌العاده‌ای موجب دگرگونی هویت جمعی در طول تاریخ تولیدشده است. هویت جمعی ممکن است در اطراف بسیاری از عوامل مختلف و یا ترکیبی از عوامل، ازجمله طبقه، نژاد، قومیت، اتصال بومی به زمین، موقعیت مشترک افراد تحت ظلم و ستم، جنسیت، گرایش جنسی، غرور ملی، یا مذهب پیوند بخورد.
