دو زبانگی پدیده ای است جهانی که در اکثر کشورهای جهان وجود دارد و عبارت از حالتی است که فرد به زبان دیگری غیر از زبان مادری خود آموزش می بیند . زبان مادری اولین زبان آموخته شده توسط فرد است، زبانی که فرد بدان تکلم می‌کند، با آن رشد می‌یابد و عناصر فرهنگی و اجتماعی محیط خود را توسط آن دریافته، لمس کرده و با آن هویت می‌یابد. اما در بسیاری از کشورها و از جمله کشور ما، زمانی که کودک به سنی می‌رسد که باید تحت آموزش رسمی قرار گیرد، با زبانی غیر از زبان مادری خود و با زبانی که در سراسر کشور به عنوان زبان رسمی شناخته شده و از لحاظ نظام آوایی- واژگانی و دستوری متفاوت از زبان مادری اوست، آموزش می‌بیند و از این مرحله است که پدیده دو زبانگی مطرح می‌شود. بنابراین، فرد دو زبانه به فردی اطلاق می‌شود که از زمان آغاز آموزش رسمی، با زبان دیگری که در کشور عمومیت یافته و در حکم زبان دوم می‌باشد، آشنا شده و آموزش می‌بیند.
