شرکت‌ها استراتژى‌هاى مدیریت وجوه نقد خود را بر محور دو هدف تعیین مى‌کنند: ۱. تهیه و تأمین وجه نقد براى انجام دادن پرداخت‌هاى شرکت؛ ۲. به حداقل رساندن وجوهى که در شرکت به‌صورت راکد باقى مى‌ماند. هدف دوم بازتاب این طرز تفکر است که اگر اقلامى از دارائى به‌درستى مصرف نشود، هیچ نوع بازدهى براى شرکت نخواهد داشت. متأسفانه، این دو هدف ممکن است با یکدیگر در تناقض باشد. پائین آوردن سطح وجوه نقد و به‌کارگیرى کلیه وجوه نقد احیاناً باعث کمبود وجه نقد براى پرداخت‌هاى به موقع شرکت مى‌شود؛ بنابراین، استراتژى‌هاى مدیریت وجوه نقد باید به‌گونه‌اى باشد که بین این دو هدف نوعى هماهنگى ایجاد شود. با این همه باید گفت که هدف پرداخت به موقع تعهدات از هدف به حداقل رساندن وجوه را که مهم‌تر است.
