بانک جهانی نام دیگر بانک بین‌المللی توسعه و ترمیم (IBRD) است. همراه با چهار شعبه دیگر خود: مؤسسه بین‌المللی توسعه ، مؤسسه مالی بین‌المللی ، آژانس تضمین سرمایه گذاری چند جانبه‌ای و مرکز بین‌المللی برای حل و فصل منازعات سرمایه‌گذاری ، گروه بانک جهانی را تشکیل می‌دهند. بانک جهانی یکی از سه رکن برتون وودز را تشکیل می‌دهد. سه سازمان صندوق بین‌المللی پول (IMF)، بانک بین‌المللی ترمیم و توسعه (IBRD) یا بانک جهانی و گات که البته امروزه جای خود را به سازمان تجارت جهانی (WTO) داده است، به‌طور جمعی تشکلیل‌دهنده سیستم برتون وودز هستند. در پایان جنگ جهانی دوم از طرفی عواقب منفی جنگ جهانی و از طرف دیگر سیاست‌های خودخواهانه تجاری اوایل دهه 1930 منجر به ایجاد مشکلات اقتصادی زیادی برای کشورها شده و توان تولیدی کشورها به‌شدت تقلیل یافته بود. به‌همین دلیل در 2-21 ژوئیه 1944 (قبل از پایان جنگ)، به پیشنهاد روزولت (رئیس جمهور وقت آمریکا)، کنفرانس پولی و مالی سازمان ملل متحد با شرکت نمایندگان 44 کشور در برتون وودز تشکیل و طی آن موافقت‌نامه‌های تأسیس بانک بین‌المللی ترمیم و توسعه (بانک جهانی) و صندوق بین‌المللی پول تصویب شد. بانک جهانی در دسامبر 1945 تأسیس شد و در نوامبر 1947 با تصویب مجمع عمومی سازمان ملل متحد به‌صورت رسمی در آمد و به جرگه نهادهای تخصصی سازمان ملل متحد پیوست. بانک جهانی ابتدا برای کمک به بازسازی خرابی‌های جنگ جهانی دوم به‌وجود آمد، ولی در سال 1949، به‌سمت ارتقای توسعه اقتصادی در کشورهای توسعه‌نیافته معطوف شد. هدف اصلی بانک جهانی اعطای وام برای توسعه و گسترش طرح‌های تولیدی آن دسته از کشورهای در حال توسعه است که عضو بانک هستند. این وام‌ها برای مقاصدی مانند اجرای پروژه‌های لوله‌کشی آب آشامیدنی، آموزش و پرورش و همچنین اجرای برنامه‌های کلی عمرانی از جمله واردات کالاهای صنعتی است. فقط اعضای صندوق بین‌المللی پول می‌توانند به عضویت بانک جهانی درآیند. از طرف دیگر شرط اولیه عضویت در مؤسسه بین‌المللی توسعه و مؤسسه مالی بین‌المللی، عضویت در بانک جهانی است.
