دستمزد مثل قیمت در بازار، تصفیه کننده بازار کار محسوب می‌شود. دستمزد دو نوع اسمی و واقعی دارد. دستمزد اسمی مقدار پول و دستمزدی است که به یک نیروی کار پرداخت می‌شود، دستمزد واقعی در حقیقت بیان کننده قدرت خرید یک نیروی کار است و بنا به تعریف برابر نسبت دستمزد اسمی به سطح عمومی قیمتها ست. بنابراین ممکن است دستمزد واقعی کاهش یابد در حالیکه دستمزد اسمی افزایش یافته چون سطح عمومی قیمتها بیشتر افزایش یافته‌است.و از آنجایی که با افزایش دستمزدها سطح عمومی قیمت ها نیز افزایش می یابد باید دید قدرت خرید مردم دستخوش چه تفییری می گردد . البته در یک حالت این افزایش دستمزد موجب افزایش سطح عمومی قیمت ها نمیشود و آن هم زمانی است که افزایش نسبی قیمتها بیشتر از افزایش متوسط بهره وری یا محصول نهایی کار ( نیروی انسانی ) نباشد.
