رضایت شغلی دارای دو بعد جداگانه است. یکی از این ابعاد که به عامل بهداشت معروف است دربردارنده ویژگیهای محیطی شغل و جنبه های بیرونی مانند سرپرستی، حقوق، روابط بین فردی، شرایط و موقعیتهای کاری است. دومین بعد معروف به عوامل برانگیزانده است که در واقع عوامل وابسته به وظایف، محتوای شغل و جنبه های درونی آن و در بردارنده جنبه هایی مانند اهمیت دادن به پیشرفت، مسئولیت و رشد است. به همین دلیل هرزبرگ معتقد است رضایت شغلی را نمی توان تحت عنوان قطبهای متضاد یک پیوستار منفرد و دوقطبی که نقطه ای خنثی (نه رضایت و نه نارضایتی) در مرکز آن است، مورد مطالعه قرار دارد. زیرا چندین خصیصه به گونه پایدار مربوط به رضایت و نارضایتی شغلی است. بسیاری از افراد بیش از هر چیز، عوامل درونی (مانند پیشرفت، تشخیص و ) را به منزله منابع رضایت و عوامل بیرونی (خط مشی سازمانی، سرپرستی، حقوق دریافتی، ارتباط با همکاران و ) را به عنوان عوامل نارضایتی شغلی بیان کرده اند. رضایت شغلی را می توان به بهترین وجه یک فرایند ارزشیابی تعریف کرد که آنچه را که یک فرد دارد در برابر آنچه خواستار آن است مورد بررسی قرار می دهد.
