ارگونومی یا همان مهندسی فاکتورهای انسانی، علمی ترکیبی است که سعی دارد ابزارها، دستگاه ها، محیط کار و مشاغل را با توجه به توانایی هایی جسمی – فکری و محدودیت ها و علائق انسانها، طراحی نماید. این علم با هدف افزایش بهره وری، با عنایت بر سلامتی، ایمنی و رفاه انسان در محیط، شکل گرفته است. همچنین این علم در تلاش است بجای متناسب سازی انسان با محیط، محیط را با انسان متناسب سازد. در این راستا، سازمان بین المللی کار ، واژة ارگونومی را به معنای متناسب کردن کار و شغل برای انسان تعریف کرده است. این علم برای طراحی و ساخت ابزار و سیستم های تولیدی از ساده تا پیچیده و بغرنج، حل مشکلات مربوط به تکنولوژی نوین، و حتی ابزار و وسائل زندگی روزمره، کاربرد دارد. امروزه، از طراحی یک ابزار ساده نظیر انبردستی ساده ( از نظر نوع جنس، مصالح بکار رفته، اندازة دسته، نوع و ترکیب پلاستیکی دسته آن و ) و یا یک خودکار ( از نظر قطر، اندازه، رنگ و ) گرفته تا طراحی یک سیستم تولیدی کامل، از ارگونومی استفاده می شود.
