برنامه ریزی منابع سازمانی سیستمی است که با هدف ایجاد بستر مناسب برای انجام کامل مدیریت امور شرکت ها طراحی شده است. با استفاده از این سیستم، امکان ارتباط بین تمام واحد های یک شرکت تجاری و بازرگانی وجود داشته و مدیر شرکت در هر لحظه می تواند در تمام امورشرکت نظیر:امور مالی،پرسنلی و تولید،نظارت و مدیریت داشته باشد. این سیستم باعث می شود تا تمام بخش های یک شرکت و عملیات انجام شده در آن ها، دریک سیستم کامپیوتری جمع آوری شوند؛ به گونه ای که سیستم مذکوربتواند تمام نیاز های شرکت را در مدیریت، برطرف کند. مزیت های عمده ای ارائه می کند که در سیستم های سازمانی غیریکپارچه وجود ندارند: یکپارچگی سازمانی استانداردسازی فرایندهای سازمانی ، مهندسی مجدد فرایندهای سازمانی ، امکان نصب و راه اندازی سریعتر، امکان و یا تسهیل توسعه سیستمها و تکنولوژیهای جدیداز جمله JIT،،ABC ، تغییر تمرکز از برنامه نویسی کامپیوتری در سازمان به بهبود فرایندها، فراهم شدن زیر ساخت لازم به منظور پرداختن به SCM و CRM ، توسعه زیر ساخت لازم به منظور وارد شدن به بحث e-Business، یکپارچه سازی اطلاعات، یکپارچگی اطلاعات در مورد سفارشات مشتریان ، استاندارد سازی و سرعت بخشیدن به فرآیند تولید،کاهش موجودی انبار، استاندارد سازی اطلاعات
ویژگی های سیسنم برنامه ریزی منابع انسانی عبارتند از:
مهم‌ترین ویژگی یک سیستم ERP فرآیندگرا بودن آن است. در واقع یکی از مهم‌ترین ویژگی‌های یک ERP و یکی از ضرورت‌های شکل‌گیری این‌گونه سیستم‌های سازمانی توجه به فرآیندهای سازمانی در بین حوزه‌های کارکردی است. انعطاف پذیری: سیستم های ERP باید بتوانند به نیازهای متغیر سازمان ها و شرکت های استفاده کننده پاسخ دهند. فراگیر بودن: سیستم های ERP باید وظایف سازمانی مختلفی را پشتیبانی کنند و متناسب با طیف وسیعی از سازمان ها مورد استفاده قرار گیرند.فرا شرکتی: این سیستم ها باید به صورت online به سازمان های دیگر و سایر شرکای تجاری از جمله تامین کنندگان و مشتریان متصل باشند. بهترین روش های موجود: مجموعه ای از بهترین روش های مورد استفاده و تجربه شده در جهان باید در این نرم افزارها گردآوری شده باشد.
