It is commonly admitted that Freud, after a decade of practising hypnosis, gave it up for psychoanalysis. Presented as an epistemological break between hypnosis and psychoanalysis, this desertion is presented as a commonly accepted idea, which the authors do not agree with. Moreover, if psychoanalysis complies with the heritage of hypnosis, it appears more and more clearly that some chief concepts of its knowledge are directly linked to the latter. Far from having given up his interest for hypnosis during his psychoanalytic career, Freud – as his work shows – used the knowledge which it provides, in the aim of supporting the main principles of his metapsychology, for instance. On the other hand, this knowledge should allows us to understand more easily what hypnosis could reveal of its “mystery” for the inventor of psychoanalysis.
