تبعیض قیمت وقتی رخ می‌دهد که کالایی مشابه با قیمت‌های متفاوت (نسبت به هزینهٔ نهایی تولید کالا) به مشتریان مختلف به فروش می‌رسد. برای مثال کتاب با جلد گالینگور هزینهٔ نهایی چند برابری نسبت به کتاب با جلد شومیز ندارد ولی قیمت آن گاهی تا چند برابر قیمت کتاب با جلد شومیز است. در استراتژی تبعیض قیمتی، محصولات اعم از کالا یا خدمات با قیمت یکسانی ارائه نمی‌شوند. این تبعیض قیمتی انواع مختلفی دارد. به عنوان مثال، یک کارخانه‌ی شکلات یک نوع شکلات را با سه جور بسته‌بندی لوکس، معمولی، و فله‌ای به‌ترتیب برای سه منطقه‌ی اعیان‌نشین، متوسط و فقیر در یک شهر با سه قیمت گران، متوسط و ارزان توزیع می‌کند. در این‌جا منطقه‌ی جغرافیایی برای کارخانه‌دار نقش علامت‌دهنده دارد و به طور تقریبی مشخص می‌کند که درآمد ساکنین هر منطقه در چه سطحی است. کارخانه‌دار می‌تواند از این علامت برای بیشینه کردن سود خود استفاده کند.
