نفتا یا پیمان تجارت آزاد آمریکای شمالی یکی از قدرتمندترین و گسترده‌ترین معاهده‌های جهانی است که سبب ایجاد همکاری‌های وسیعی در سراسر آمریکای شمالی شده است. پس از پایان جنگ سرد قطب های اقتصادی جدید به وجود آمده اند که ضرورت تشکیل بازار واحد جهانی را می طلبید.در فوریه ی 1991 سه کشور آمریکا،کانادا و مکزیک به درخواست رئیس جمهور وقت مکزیک(سالیناس)مذاکره ای در مورد یک پیمان تجارت آزاد آغاز کردند.در 17 دسامبر 1992 این پیمان میان سه کشور به امضا رسید که از آغاز سال 1994 به اجرا در آمد. پیمان نفتا را می توان از نظر وسعت بازار بزرگ ترین موافقتنامه منطقه ای دانست که تاکنون تحقق یافته است. عامل تاسیس نفتا, موافقتنامه تجارت آزاد آمریکا – کانادا, و تمایل آمریکا بود به اینکه ، همچنان قدرت بی رقیب در بازار جهان باشد و هدفش رفع موانع تجاری بین سه کشور عضو از طریق ایجاد یک منطقه آزاد تجاری بود که عوارض واردات بین سه کشور عضو برداشته شود یا کاهش داده شود.
