بر اساس مفاهیم و تعاریف ارائه شده در نظام حسابداری ملی نتیجه رابطه مبادله بازرگانی مفهومی است ناظر بر تجارت خارجی کالاها و خدمات و آثار اقتصادی ناشی از تغییر قیمت های نسبی واردات و صادرات در اقتصاد. این موضوع به ویژه در محاسبه درآمد ملی واقعی، به عنوان یکی از اجزاء اصلی تشکیل دهنده آن اهمیت دارد . بررسی و تجزیه و تحلیل تجارت جهانی کالاها و خدمات بین کشورها یکی از موضوعات عمده در ادبیات اقتصادی و نیز بسیاری از تحقیقات تجربی در این زمینه بوده است. این موضوع از جنبه های متنوعی همچون مزیت نسبی کشورها در تجارت کالاها و خدمات، تأثیر مبادلات خارجی در بازار ارز و نتیجتًا بازار پول، استراتژی توسعه صادرات، تاثیرپذیری قیمت های داخلی از فرایند تجارت جهانی و سایر ابعاد، مورد توجه اقتصاددانان و سیاستگذاران اقتصادی قرار گرفته است. مازاد تجارت خارجی دلالت بر توانایی یک اقتصاد در تامین تقاضای دنیای خارج علاوه بر تقاضای داخلی دارد و بر عکس، کسری تجاری نشان دهنده عدم توانایی اقتصاد مورد نظر در تأمین تقاضای داخلی کالاها و خدمات است. بنابراین در نظام حسابهای ملی، از طریق برآورد ارزش صادارت و واردات به قیمتهای جاری و ثابت، امکان تحلیل این وجه از تجارت خارجی فراهم می گردد. علاوه بر این، وجه دیگری از تجارت خارجی که در ارتباط با قیمت کالاها و خدمات مورد مبادله و تغییرات شاخص قیمت صادرات به شاخص قیمت واردات قرار دارد عامل مهمی در برد یا باخت تجاری یک کشور محسوب می شود. این موضوع تحت عنوان نتیجه (اثر) رابطه مبادله بازرگانی، مورد توجه عده ای از صاحبنظران اقتصادی و بویژه نظام حسابهای ملی بوده است. از نظر مفهومی نتیجه رابطه مبادله بازرگانی، ناظر بر تغییرات رابطه مبادله و تا ثیر آن بر درآمد ملی واقعی است.
